Forum Setup


MS SQL Server Version:
What version of MS SQL Server is running.

Gives Platform Information on the server Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (Intel X86) Feb 9 2007 22:47:07 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

Time Zone:
The time zone of the web server.

A drop-down box of the servers local time zone.

Forum Email:
The from address when sending emails to users.

The email address for the site (e.g. adminuser@yafhere.com)

Require Email Verification:
If unchecked users will not need to verify their email address.

A check box to send an unverified user an email when registering. This is coupled with the unverified user list on the admin index page. (A bug in 1.9.1.6 and earlier may lead the admin to attempt to go the the user page to verify users. This will cause an index error.

Show Moved Topics:
If this is checked, topics that are moved will leave behind a pointer to the new topic.

This leaves a trace for topics that move between forums.

Links in New Window:
If this is checked, links in messages will open in a new window.

Clicking on hot links in messages will allow the user to stay logged in.

Show Groups:
Should the groups a user is part of be visible on the posts page.

Shows a list of user groups that the user belongs to on the page.

Show Groups in profile:
Should the groups a user is part of be visible on the users profile page.

Shows the groups you belong to on the page.

Use File Table:
Uploaded files will be saved in the database instead of the file system.

Stores files in the data base for easier delete oe file system (default for cheaper storage).

Show RSS Links:
Enable or disable display of RSS links throughout the forum.

Allows the use of news readers that use really simple syndication to link to these sites.

Show Page Generated Time:
Enable or disable display of page generation text at the bottom of the page.

Gives the last execution time of the page on the server. Good for performance (e.g. This page was generated in 0.070 seconds.)

Show Forum Jump Box:
Enable or disable display of the Forum Jump Box throughout the forum.

No reason not to select this. it's the jump box to other forum sections.

Display Points System:
If checked, points for posting will be displayed for each user.

Depending on the number of posts, the host may allow a ranking of points for those who post more often. (e.g. 0-10 points = newbie)

Remove Nested Quotes:
Automatically remove nested quote tags from replies.

These quote tags in messages can be doubled up and cause problems. Check this.

Show Member Stats:
Show the total members statistics on the front page.

The number of online users on the front page

(e.g. There are 28 posts in 10 topics in 14 forums.

Last post Today at 7:46:00 AM by xxx.

We have 24 registered members.

The newest member is yyy.}

Poll Votes Dependant on IP:
By default, poll voting is tracked via username and client-side cookie. (One vote per username. Cookies are used if guest voting is allowed.) If this option is enabled, votes also use IP as a reference providing the most security against voter fraud.

Checks to ensure that users can't log in to cheat from the same computer.

Max File Size:
Maximum size of uploaded files. Leave empty for no limit.

Sets the number of bytes that a file upload can have. (e.g. For 150,000 bytes (approx 150k) set this to 150000 ) No commas in numbers.

Smilies Display Grid Size:
Number of smilies to show by number of rows and columns.

Smiles and emoticons can be set up. Hint use a divisble numbers (24 = 6*4) of smiles to keep them on one page.

Posts Per Page:
Number of posts to show per page.

Example 20 posts per page

Topics Per Page:
Number of topics to show per page.


Topics are shown in the active topics.

Days before posts are locked:
Number of days until posts are locked and not possible to edit or delete. Set to 0 for no limit.

Posts over a certain age can be locked (for archival) and may not be deleted (except by admins and Mods)

Post Flood Delay:
Number of seconds before another post can be entered. (Does not apply to admins or mods.)


Slows down the spammers.

Date and time format from language file:
If this is checked, the date and time format will use settings from the language file. Otherwise the browser settings will be used.


Converts date from local format to server format.

Create NNTP user names:
Check to allow users to automatically be created when downloading usenet messages. Only enable this in a test environment, and NEVER in a production environment. The main purpose of this option is for performance testing.


Avoid this unless you know what it does. Allows you take usenet messages into the system.

Forum Ads

2nd post ad:
Place the code that you wish to be displayed in each thread after the 1st post. If you do not want an ad to be displayed, don't put anything in the box.

Text here shows up as a sponser message in the topics.

Show ad from above to signed in users:
If checked, signed in users will see ads.


Turns on and off the sponsor message.

Editing/Formatting Settings

Forum Editor:
Select global editor type for your forum. To use the HTML editors (FCK and FreeTextBox) the .bin file must be in the \bin directory and the proper support files must be put in \editors.

There are a number of html editors that are handy.

Accepted HTML Tags:
Comma seperated list (no spaces) of HTML tags that are allowed in posts using HTML editors.


Any HTML tags you'll allow - Tables tags are useful.

Permissions Settings

Allow User Change Theme:
Should users be able to choose what theme they want to use?


This allows the user to change the color theme setting. This can be a maintenance challenge, if you decide to revoke it.

Allow User Change Language:
Should users be able to choose what language they want to use?


Put Yes, if you want different languages.

Allow Private Messages:
Allow users to access and send private messages.


Turns on the PM function of the site for private message inbox.

Allow Private Message Notifications:
Allow users email notifications when new private messages arrive.


You can allow users to set on PM's to also send an email. I'd think hard about this.

Allow Email Sending:
Allow users to send emails to each other.


Explanatory, but turn this off.

Allow Signatures:
Allow users to create signatures.


Allows the users to customize the additional posting signature.

Disable New Registrations:
New users won't be able to register.


Closes the site to new users.

SMTP Server Settings

SMTP Server:
To be able to send posts you need to enter the name of a valid smtp server.


Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) is used to send email. For most hosted sites, this is server is named smtp.yourdomain.com or localhost. Ask your hosting ISP.

SMTP User Name:
If you need to be authorized to send email.


This is a mail account (which you need to set up) for the SMTP connection. Many ISP's set these in tandem with a POP3 user account.

SMTP Password:
If you need to be authorized to send email.


The password for the account.

Avatar Settings

Allow remote avatars:
Can users use avatars from other websites.


Allows the user to access remote avatar pictures. An Avatar is an image of the user's persona.

Allow avatar uploading:
Can users upload avatars to their profile.


Allows user to upload an avatar image rather than pick one from a .pak.

Avatar Width:
Maximum width for avatars.


In pixels.

Avatar Height:
Maximum height for avatars.


in pixels.

Avatar Size:
Maximum size for avatars in bytes.
